Letter, 1858 Apr. 14, from J.W. Rogers promising to send a long letter telling of his adventures until he settled down as Judge of the Court of Mines and Chairman of General Sessions, Ballarat, and introducing William Champ, son of his friend Champ, ex-Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land, and now Inspector-General of Prisons, Victoria. The following letters among the correspondence of J. E. Thorold Rogers contain references to Australia: 1. 26 June 1875, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, Athenaeum, London assuring Rogers that his works were frequently referred to in the Parliaments and journals of the colonies and fully appreciated and that Rogers had rendered important services to the cause of free trade. 2. 22 May 1862, Richard Cobden referring to a long and interesting letter he had received from Bowen, Governor of Queensland, and asking if a periodical could be established at Oxford to advocate Adam Smith's ideas, carry them to their logical conclusions, oppose feudalism from a p̀olitico-economical' point of view, and show up the colonial system as an anachronism. 3. 3 Mar. 1864, J. E. Thorold Rogers to Cobden commenting on the visit of the Government Commissioner from Queensland who was in England working on a v̀ery sensible colonial emigration scheme', 20,000 or more emigrants having been sent to Queensland.
